RenaissanceRe Junior Gold Cup off to exciting start
Puerto Rico’s Gianmarco Piovanetti and American Minx Anthony topped the fleets after the opening day of the RenaissanceRe Junior Gold Cup on Wednesday.
Piovanetti was the most consistent male sailor as he posted a 6-3-1-3 record to seize the overall lead of the regatta. Switzerland’s Edward Hirsch sits two points adrift in second followed by Anthony a farther point back in third.
Bermuda champion Miguel Power and Nina Gotfredsen top the local fleets in fifth and 15th respectively after the opening four races of the 13-race series
Dede Cooper, the regatta chair, summed up the first day as a success.
‘“It was a great first day. Winds were shifty and 16-18 knots in choppy seas,“ she said.
2023 RenaissanceRe Junior Gold Cup
The RenaissanceRe Junior Gold Cup regatta returns after a three-year hiatus due to a break during Covid.
Started in 2002 the RenaissanceRe Junior Gold Cup invitational regatta invites some of the best Optimist sailors in their country to come to Bermuda and sail against the Bermudians.
The 19th edition of the regatta will be held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club October 3-7, 2023, with invitations to 14 sailors from 14 different countries. Dede Cooper, Regatta Chair, says she is thrilled to see this regatta return to the Bermuda sailing calendar.
Expected on the start line will be sailors from Antigua, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA. Six of the sailors are female. They will be joined by 26 of Bermuda’s best youth sailors.
